Earth and Sky School
is committed to providing children with organic,
play-based,
nature-led learning in a
loosely-structured, multi-aged
magical Forest environment.

As stewards of the Natural World, Earth and Sky School mentors to all members of the Earth and Sky School Community, the development of direct one-on-one relationships with the natural world, from Forests, to Parks, to the sparrows in front of your house.
When we love and intimately know the Nature that surrounds us, we become stewards and protectors.
At EaS, this relationship is the fabric of our experience.
We have favorite places that we beg to go to, where the trees have names and the
Rocks have Legends.
We develop a deep appreciation of this patch of Forest on our ancient First Mountain.
We learn to Treat our Forest kindly and with that we preserve and caretake and learn from the natural world.
We tread lightly and interact kindly with the plants and animals.

All programs in Eagle Rock Reservation.
Sliding Scale available for all programs.
Campers: 4yrs*-11 yrs. This is a multi-aged program and all our groups have a range of ages, with our youngest campers, *3.5 to 4 years old*. Younger campers should be able (and hopefully!) happy to go on 15 minute walks without being carried and able to communicate basic needs. (We don't have the same structure as preschool programs.)
.
CIT Program: 12-14 yrs. (Counselor in Training)
Our CIT program is growing and I'm thrilled at the opportunity for older kids (12-14yrs.) to have the benefits of Nature, our Learning and Lessons and to develop their own leadership skills. This is available for ALL our programs listed below at half the camper price.
To be a CIT, they need to write a paragraph about what they hope they will learn from being in the Forest with Earth and Sky School, supporting the younger campers.
EaS Counselor Interns: H.S./College
Counselor Interns at EaS, have an opportunity to develop their own personal leadership, listening and observational skills, critical thinking, mentorship, and Earth and Sky School unique pedagogy. If you know of any high school-aged students who would like to have a unique opportunity to develop participate, please have them email me.

What We Do in the Forest.
Earth and Sky School is rooted in the belief that children need emotional and physical space to allow themselves to Unfurl, as we see the Leaves around us do in early Spring or Grow and Change as all Life does. The Forest welcomes us and the children are given significant freedom to explore, discover, create, connect and play. ( With a low camper/counselor ratio, we can give children this freedom.)
Our time together is intended to nurture children's creativity and instincts . Our Camp Schedule runs roughly like this:
~Listening Log. Immediately upon arrival, we take 3 deep breaths to attune ourselves to the energy of the Forest. In addition to general reminders, greetings, etc, the Group Leader shares nature stories and we as a group discuss the meaning of a story and what it can teach us.
~Free Play at Base Camp: Resisting the adult urge to give kidsactivities, we hold a space for the kids to settle in and self-direct their play. Counselors are present to facilitate this play and if appropriate, suggest or engage the kids in some ideas. Craft materials are on our tarp and available for projects. We have a lengthy time to get settled in, make connections with the Trees and Terrain, connect with other campers and our wonderful counselors and CITS and unwind and play.
~Food/Eating: Kids can eat whenever they feel hungry, but are always asked to eat before our walks. Please pack whatever and how much food you think your child will need.
~Adventure Walks: We take an Adventure Walk after a chunk of time at Base Camp. Backpacks are left there but we encourage campers to bring their water bottles. Our walks take us to favorite spots in the Woods approximately 15 minutes for each way with a good chunk of time to play at the destination. Most of our favorite places have accompanying stories and legends, i.e.Sleeping Giants; Dead Deer Valley, Triple Twin-Tree Valley.
(For Summer Camp, 1-3pm)
Afternoons: The afternoon group has a settling-in quality where we move at a slower pace, read and hear stories, connect with a new group, continue play. They love spending time in our beloved Base Camp, where very quickly the children feel completely at home. Depending on the day, we may go for another short walk.

Earth and Sky School seeks to illuminate the ways we are Nature and the lessons we can learn when we feel that connection. Woven through our time together are stories, stories with learnings and teachings that each child (and counselor or adult) can take what they will from.
Lessons such as 'Paws not Claws" in which Ms. Angelique shares how at first her two cats would fight with their claws. Which of course, are 'retractable' - meaning they can be out.. or not.
Eventually the cats stopped; and now they like to play-fight with their paws not their claws. I like to ask the children why I would tell this story to them and hear their interpretations. Thereafter, a simple 'Paws not claws" is a gentle reminder to bring it back to play.
